Our Academics

"Don't compare your child to others. There's no comparison between the sun and the moon, they shine when it's their time."

Language Arts

We will be doing the Daily 5 as part of our reader’s workshop. The 5 include: read to yourself, read to someone, and listen to reading, word work and free writing. We will also be doing writer’s workshop that will focus on specific genres of writing.

Expeditionary Learning

The teaching in EL fosters curiosity about the world by creating learning situations that provide important topics to think about, time to experiment, and time to make sense of what is observed. It emphasizes high achievement through revision, active learning, character growth and teamwork. We will be doing two expeditions this year starting with Little Hands on the Farm and finishing the school year with Around the World.

Writing

We will have a daily writers workshop where we will work on developing their abilities as writers primarily using Lucy Calkins's theories and programs.

Mathematics

We will be using a Singapore math program. This program is very hands-on and is designed to help students understand math in a meaningful way. Help your child with any math opportunities that occur in real-life both with school and in the their environment. If you have a second grader in my class, your student will be in Mrs. Thibault's room. Here is a link to her classroom webpage: http://thibaultcrew.weebly.com/
